{"id":909,"date":"2014-07-15T13:00:54","date_gmt":"2014-07-15T20:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.talkinggrid.com\/dev\/?p=909"},"modified":"2014-07-15T13:00:54","modified_gmt":"2014-07-15T20:00:54","slug":"travel-bright","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/talkinggrid.com\/dev\/travel-bright\/","title":{"rendered":"Travel Bright"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>23 TIPS on How and Why to Fly, NOW!<\/h3>\n<p>Flying in from Los Angeles to New York or back and forth is a routine familiar to many bi-costal commuters.\u00a0\u00a0Yet not everyone finds pleasure in constant travel.\u00a0\u00a0The many restrictions and the potential for loss is high when one is going away from home.\u00a0\u00a0Security, Terrorism and Other Hazards plague the transition between \u201cArrival and Departure.\u201d Yet, travel is intensely important.\u00a0 \u00a0We cannot avoid it.\u00a0\u00a0Without travel, we are stuck in ONE place.\u00a0Furthermore, we cannot maintain our far-flung friendships and many attachments without getting on a plane, occasionally.\u00a0\u00a0Getting out to see old friends and\u00a0<em>perhaps<\/em>\u00a0family is a way of maintaining one\u2019s status, relationships, and memories.\u00a0\u00a0Creating NEW impressions of places known before is vital to feeling ALIVE.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps, we loss a part of ourselves if we do not get on a plane a GO see a museum exhibit in another city just because it relates to some arcane topic we studied in college.\u00a0\u00a0Without planes, it seems, we cannot unlock our full human potential!\u00a0\u00a0Of course,\u00a0<em>some people<\/em>\u00a0like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emily_Dickinson\">Emily Dickinson<\/a>\u00a0(who famously wrote moving poetry from the self imposed prison, in an attic, without the benefit of actual trips or internet connection, managed to travel through books and in her imagination quite\u00a0<em>effectively)<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0Poets\u2026\u00a0\u00a0unlike most people can (time) travel (yet\u2026 this is another topic).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Unless YOU have the gift of reading (and writing) between the lines\u2026 don\u2019t try it in public. OK?<\/p>\n<p>The obvious key is to successful airplane travel is packing BRIGHT. \u00a0Take a little of what makes you happy, comfortable, and content at home.\u00a0\u00a0It is right to fine-tune what one\u00a0<em>must have<\/em>\u00a0in order to function.\u00a0\u00a0In this way, we are all different as snowflakes.\u00a0\u00a0What\u00a0<em>you\u00a0<\/em>have in your bag will not work for\u00a0<em>me.<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0Yet,\u00a0<strong>Talkinggrid\u2019s 23 Must Have Travel Items<\/strong>\u00a0are a simple yet tried and true method for staying On-Top of getting around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Before the trip:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.Get ready to\u00a0Practice Politeness.\u00a0\u00a0This is an opportunity to appreciate the little things people do for your safety.\u00a0\u00a0Searching your bags, for example, is an important function for TSA agents to perform.\u00a0\u00a0IF they neglect to check some bags, some times, we\u2019d think we were not getting our money\u2019s worth. So\u2026 we appreciate the people that do this (mostly boring) job.<\/p>\n<p>2. Be prepared to eliminate doubt about your identity.\u00a0\u00a0Thus, taking seriously the oracle at Delphi\u2019s recommendation of \u201cknow thy self.\u201d If you do not have valid identification you are not going anywhere conventional, quickly.\u00a0\u00a0Thus, those of us who can verify that we are who we claim to be are SOMEBODY, at the airport where it\u00a0<em>counts.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>3. Another perk of travel is that it gives you the opportunity to<em>\u00a0\u201c<\/em>expand your portfolio of experience.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0You are fascinating.\u00a0\u00a0You write.\u00a0\u00a0Read. Paint.\u00a0\u00a0Dance. Sing.\u00a0\u00a0Yet performing all these marvelous skills in previously unknown cities can be hugely life-enhancing since whenever you arrive in a new city you have the advantage of being vulnerable and confused and thus interesting to predators and admires, alike. Bravo! Make the MOST of IT!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remember: Aerial Views\u00a0are special.\u00a0\u00a0We don\u2019t get to see all the little houses and think about how small we really are unless we are UP here in the air LOOKING DOWN and seeing that what cost millions to the individual is but a spec on the patchwork quilt that is a nation.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0Most importantly,\u00a0Get a Grip!\u00a0\u00a0Every time you leave HOME on a major trip you are embarking on more than a mere journey from here to there.\u00a0\u00a0YOU are making decisions about what matters to YOU.\u00a0\u00a0What is important enough to get YOU and only YOU out of bed?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0WHAT must YOU pack that I wouldn\u2019t pack?\u00a0\u00a0Tell me, pretty please.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0Make time\u00a0for enjoying the trip.\u00a0\u00a0Don\u2019t forget that it can be fun to explore the airport.\u00a0\u00a0Past security there are shops, restaurants, and plenty of opportunities for relaxation, including those inviting coin operated massaging chairs.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>BAGS INSIDE BAGS!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Packing everything in a tot or overnight bag and THEN put it in your luggage\u2026 Hah!\u00a0It makes you so\u2026 more prepared for shopping or mini-trips within your over-arching or BIG trip; try taking an extra tot with a fanny-pack full of makeup; that WORKS.\u00a0\u00a0YOU get by better by having much more than one bag with you,\u00a0<em>always<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the Plane:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li>The Carry On, itself must be pretty.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You don\u2019t want your bag looking like anyone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>(Mine is a lavender floral print by Anna Sui for Tumi with a load of interior pockets, including a lined pouch for jewelry.\u00a0\u00a0It works for me.)<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li>The Airport Pic-Nic.\u00a0\u00a0Who can stand to eat what passes for food in most cases?\u00a0\u00a0Not I. Thus, I bring my own home-cooked fresh meals, on board.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You may think this is a bit much.\u00a0\u00a0Yet, I find it more economical and healthy to cook, contain, travel items.\u00a0\u00a0transport, and enjoy the food I know is made fresh and to my specifications than to hope and eat whatever I can get.\u00a0\u00a0That is why\u00a0<strong>Whole Foods<\/strong>\u00a0offers thermal bags.\u00a0\u00a0Buy a few, use them regularly, and make your life better.<\/li>\n<li>The Eye Mask.\u00a0\u00a0Give yourself some time to relax.\u00a0\u00a0Check out.\u00a0\u00a0Snooze.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Wash your hands with extra care; bring along a quality\u00a0Nail Brush.\u00a0\u00a0Nothing beats having very clean hands, fingernails, and being well groomed.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Taking a moment to massage your hands, think about life, and reflect how lucky we are to have running water\u2026 is priceless.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget to\u00a0Moisturize and hydrate.\u00a0\u00a0Drink plenty of water before, after, and during your flight.\u00a0\u00a0It will keep all systems running smoothly and the exercise of walking down the isle of a long air-plane in flight, several times will do you better than just sitting there.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Noise cancelling headsets,\u00a0Bose Speakers, for example, (or at least ear-plugs) can mean the difference between enjoying some rest and quiet time or\u2026 NOT.\u00a0\u00a0Noise cancelling headsets work well to erase the voices of the two aging hookers that have seats behind you\u2026 or that monstrously energetic child\u2019s wailing\u2026 providing the cushion of silence\u2026\u00a0your soundscape matters to you, for some of us, SILENCE is everything.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Analogue Journal(s).\u00a0 This is a solid block of time when you will not be interrupted.\u00a0 You can write.\u00a0 You can write your little bleeding heart OUT.\u00a0 You can write poems to the clouds!\u00a0 You can write a staggering list of Forgotten Lovers you wish you\u2019d had!\u00a0 You can write what kinds of parties you intend to have for your loved ones in the coming years.\u00a0 Get to all the self-indulgent ego-boasting writing, you always want(ed) to do, now!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>In your Carry On:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Pack\u00a0Gloves.\u00a0\u00a0In all weathers, gloves are a gift to the self.\u00a0\u00a0They protect your hands and light-weight ones keep your hands soft and germs off the finger tips. Thicker ones keep sensitive hands warm.\u00a0\u00a0Gloves, leather or knit, are small yet high impact Sports gloves, for example ensure that you will be prepared to use the gym at the hotel.\u00a0\u00a0Snow gloves make fights with packed balls of icy moister, FUN!<\/li>\n<li>A Selection of Hats.\u00a0\u00a0Always carry a knit hat or two, they are tiny and make a huge difference in how comfy you are in ultra air-conditioned plane rides from here to there.\u00a0\u00a0Also wear a proper hat, something fashionable to go with your jacket and slacks, which you take off in order to go through security.\u00a0\u00a0Just the act of taking off your hat, makes you LOOK civilized.\u00a0\u00a0Civilized is better in the world of air travel, deal with it.<\/li>\n<li>Cashmere Scarves!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Life without the lightweight warmth of cashmere wool may not be worth living.\u00a0\u00a0I know.\u00a0It was difficult before I discovered the major pluses inherent in the plushness, this soft and fine stuff provides.\u00a0Two or three, good scarves fit anywhere and define YOU, dashing.\u00a0\u00a0I prefer deep colors: tomato red, eggplant, and coffee scarves make me feel cozy and approachable.\u00a0\u00a0Also remember: big plush, thicker, scarves can serve as blankets and improvised extra baggage.\u00a0\u00a0The ladies in South Africa wear big ones, with which they wrap their babies around their bodies, while getting from here to there.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0LOVE!<\/li>\n<li>Silk Blouses and Cotton Tank Tops:\u00a0Light weight, breathable, silk is a traveling girl\u2019s best friend.\u00a0\u00a0Pack five blouses in your carry on they take up NO SPACE and you are consistently well dressed!\u00a0\u00a0Wear them on their own or under wool sweaters to keep warm.\u00a0\u00a0(Cotton, shelf bra, tank-tops, with a little elastic, are wonderful underneath.\u00a0\u00a0Or\u2026 in the tropics\u2026 may stand alone as an eye-catching top, in a pinch.<\/li>\n<li>Under Garments: YOU must have seven days of fresh underwear with you NO MATTER where or how long you go for, IF traveling on a plane.\u00a0\u00a0<em>You never know\u00a0<\/em>when you get stuck\u00a0<em>somewhere<\/em>\u00a0and this is the one area of your carry-on reality you can and will control.\u00a0\u00a0Unparalleled comfort comes from finding you have clean knickers, a feeling of instant power from a quick change into fresh underwear, no matter where \u2013\u2013\u2013precisely\u2013\u2013\u2013 your earthly travels take you.\u00a0\u00a0Fresh underwear will make YOU feel worthy of respect; away from home.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li>The Neck Pillow:\u00a0\u00a0protect your strangely vulnerable, fragile, yet vital, part of your body, THE NECK, is protected and ensconced from jiggle in transit. IF you don\u2019t have ONE then I suggest you buy one at the airport.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Once you arrive you will need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Bath Salts and Oils.\u00a0\u00a0As soon as you arrive you will want to take a long soak.\u00a0\u00a0You need this to unwind, relax, and disinfect yourself from all the bugs and germs that are a part of sharing air with many strangers from all over the planet.\u00a0\u00a0In the morning: you will want to have a WAKE UP or orange, grapefruit, lime-citrus soak to get you going, again.\u00a0\u00a0In the evening: lavender, chamomile, or red-wine anti-oxidant soak will do YOU fine.<\/li>\n<li>The Travel\u00a0Library: in airports, and trips, perhaps even more than at home, we have the opportunity to read real books, with pages, made of paper.\u00a0\u00a0(Think of all the delightful paperbacks, begging to be read.\u00a0\u00a0Paper books, one can sink into, a literary bath of words for the brain to soak in!)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Take TIME with those slow and softly turning paper pages, for they will be gone soon&#8230; unless&#8212;of course&#8212;virulent nostalgia grips the polis and\u2026\u00a0\u00a0If you don\u2019t mind hauling around a selection of reading material, YOU are an exceptional being, in my book.
